The bulrush plant can be found growing along the edges of many of Wisconsin’s lakes, rivers, and streams and when dried, it makes a wonderful material for weaving. I remember, just as many of us from Wisconsin do, growing up, playing in the local creek that wove its way through my backyard in rural Wisconsin and though the water was always freezing cold, we feel warm and happy to reminisce on those sunny times. The texture of woven bulrush reminds me much of the flowing surface of water. This piece is a view into that memory and that water we all share, featuring plants and animals native to Wisconsin and the raw, natural, and untouched edges of the creeks and waterways in all of our backyards.
