"Kettle Moraine Fields" was painted on location en plein air during the 2024 Paint the Towns plein air event hosted by the Plymouth Arts Center. During the event I commuted to Plymouth from our home in Grafton to create three paintings. When I was scouting for painting locations I drove west from Plymouth and encountered this farm field which felt familiar to the farms on the street I grew up on in Bristol, WI. I was inspired by the warm afternoon light over the distant working farm on the horizon and the dramatic shadows in the foreground. The challenge of depicting such an expansive and iconic Wisconsin landscape from direct observation over a few short hours was very exciting. The large shapes and fields of color in the composition provided a wonderful opportunity to explore abstract elements of mark making and nuances of color relativity.
The painting is made on a handmade primed paper panel and framed in a handmade custom 2.5" wide black frame.
